Dental Implants

Perfect your smile with dental implants in Glasgow

People can lose teeth for many reasons and at any time in their lives. You might have had an accident, or perhaps you’ve had a tooth extraction for medical purposes. Whatever the reason may be, tooth loss can affect your everyday life. Speaking and eating can be more difficult, not to mention the damage to your confidence; it can take the joy out of life.

Dental implants are undoubtedly the most advanced and effective way to replace a missing tooth. They provide the closest alternative to replacing natural teeth; they are permanent, aesthetically excellent and provide complete confidence and comfort to smile and eat. Implants also help to stabilise irksome removable dentures.

What are dental implants?

Implants are replacement teeth that are inserted into your gums permanently. They provide an alternative to bridges or loose dentures and act just as regular teeth. If you choose an implant, you will undergo two procedures.

The first is to fit the implant into your jawbone. This is a small titanium screw that acts as an artificial tooth root. During the healing process, your bone will slowly synthesise with the screw, locking the implant into your mouth.

After you’ve healed, the second implant procedure is to fit your new tooth. A false tooth will then be attached to the screw, creating a flawless natural smile.

This procedure mimics the anatomy of a natural tooth; you would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the two.

At Allander Dental Care, Stephen Jacobs place our implants, and Kenneth McDonald restores the implant fixtures. Kenneth has completed an MSc in restorative dentistry at Glasgow Dental Hospital and is a member of the UK Association of Dental Implantologists (ADI).

We use the AstraTech system, which is one of the most advanced systems on the market.

Does it hurt?

While most dental surgeries can be slightly uncomfortable, local anaesthetic ensures that implant treatment is pain-free. You might feel some pressure, but you should not be in pain.

For many people, visits to the dentist can be very stressful. Please let us know in advance of your visit if you are anxious, and we will do everything to make your visit as comfortable as possible.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

  • A permanent solution for missing teeth
  • Versatility: can be used to support anything from a single tooth to full dental implants
  • Alternative to impractical crown bridges or dentures
  • Can improve oral hygiene and dental health
  • Highly effective at improving your appearance, smile and confidence
  • Can improve your speech
  • Allows you to eat the foods you like

How long do dental implants last?

With the proper care, implants last just as long as natural teeth do.

Your implant should be treated as a regular tooth, with regular cleaning and flossing to prevent gum disease. You should also schedule frequent check-ups with your dentist and hygienist to maintain your oral health.

Can anyone get dental implants?

As long as your dental health is reasonable and your gums are healthy, you should be eligible for implant dentistry.

If you meet any of the following conditions, please contact our Implant dentists to discuss what can be done to help complete restore your smile.

  • You’re a smoker
  • You suffer from gum disease
  • You suffer from certain conditions such as diabetes
  • You’ve had radiotherapy to your jaw

However, every case is different, and you’re best to get in touch with us directly to advise you. If you do not qualify for implant surgery, we can offer you several other options.

How much does a dental implant cost?

The NHS rarely covers dental implants. Depending on the complexity of the procedure and your specific circumstances, the cost can vary.

Although implants are a more expensive option than short-term tooth loss solutions, bear in mind that your implant should last a lifetime and could save you many trips to the dentist by improving your overall oral health.
